Bailiff / Transport
The Bailiff / Transport Division provides building security
for the Jackson County Court House. There are six deputies assigned
to this division. A x-ray machine is located at the public entrance
and is utilized to scan for weapons or contraband in purses, briefcases, and
packages. Visitors to the Court House must walk through a metal detector
to be scanned for weapons. Court House deputies provide
security for three Circuit Judges and one County Judge. There
is a deputy assigned to each judge. The deputy will accompany
a judge for every court case heard within a Court Room, and most
cases heard in the Judges' Chambers. The deputies duties include
coordination of the transportation of inmates for each Judges'
Court Room, to open and close every court session, and escorting witnesses
in and out of hearings.
These deputies also take persons into custody by
order of the court, and process them into the Jackson County Corrections
Facility. Court House deputies assist the court clerks with
the movement of trial evidence to maintain the chain of custody
and creditability. Court House deputies are responsible for
the care, custody and control of all inmates transported for
court.
Court House Deputies also respond to law enforcement
calls for service within the Court House. These disturbances
usually arise from family court, child support, divorces, and
injunction cases. Deputies accompany the Presiding Judge to hearings
held outside of the judicial center at other courthouses, and
hospitals, if necessary.
The Bailiff / Transport Division transports inmates to
and from prisons all over the South-Eastern United States. They are responsible for
providing a variety of court and judicial services, including security, extraditions, and the service of subpoenas,
warrants, writs and other official court papers throughout Jackson County.
